About Dustin

Dustin was drawn to science in elementary school. His mother recognized his inner zeal and gave him his first science kit, a weather book and barometer, in sixth grade. It was while sitting in his ninth grade science class that Dustin determined he wanted to be a professor at the University of Utah and do something meaningful in a field of science. Dustin and writing, on the other hand, didn't get along in junior high or high school. His 12th grade English teacher made sure to let him know, he might want to pursue a career that didn't involve literature. Little did she know, science and writing are irreversibly linked.

Dustin wrote his first book at 18, but when he saw how much red ink an editor left on the pages, his interest in writing waned. The downturn was short-lived and Dustin made a focused effort to improve as a writer in college and graduate school (like all serious writers, he is still working on that improvement).

A lifelong Utahn, Dustin earned a Bachelor of Science in Microbiology from Weber State University and a PhD in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Utah. He is now a Professor of Orthopaedics at the University of Utah. Dustin is a bona fide scientist by day and a novel writer, script developer, and occasional gamer by night. Dustin's passion lies in developing medical technologies to help heal those who suffer. Writing is a secondary passion as the outlets of story and imagination are morphine for the mind.
Dustin has published over 50 scientific papers, two novels, holds 13 patents, is the editor of one textbook, and enjoys mentoring graduate students, undergraduate students, lab technicians, project managers, and, most importantly, his five children. Dustin fully admits that his wife is a far better mentor to their five kids than he is.
Dustin and his family live their dream together in Utah.
